Google Docs keep crashing if you type a word repeatedly and the magical word is “And”.
So, picture this: When you start writing an important document on google docs; be it an academic essay, blog post, or article. Your brain is blank, and you start typing random words in order to get creative juices kicking in.
And you type “And” several times on repeat, without any consideration. You type “and. and. and. and. and” bam Google Docs crashed! A small word to ruin all your hard work and an embarrassing bug on the face of a software giant.
The Gmail parent company support page claims that typing this “rarely used word” a couple of times is sufficient to crash the program.
Why it happens
Initially, this bug was detected by a poster on the Google Docs help platform. They shared if you type “And” on repeat in the new document on fifth time the program would crash.
As this happens Google Docs will display “something went wrong” error with a pop-up “unable to load file”. If you try to reload this document, you will face the same error and will end up exiting it.
The poster Pat Needam claimed that he found this issue from Google personal, G Suite Basic, and Enterprise account as well.
Google ensured to fix this bug at the earliest. As for now, it’s being said that the problem is now fixed. In any case, you have got a solid excuse to miss your content submission deadline 😉.
The bug was discovered after Google introduced assistive features to improve and assist quality writing.
How to recover?
Just in case you fall victim to this new bug, google has shown some recovery options. Most importantly switch off grammar suggestions by unselecting the “show grammar suggestions” option in tools.
If this has recently affected you and you can’t access the document in question, there is a temporary fix.
Open Google Docs mobile app and access the document. Just delete these “offensive words” and access the web version of the file.
For some fortunate reason, this bug doesn’t crash documents on mobile. Just access from your phone and delete the words.
Is it just me or is Google attempting to copy or compete with Microsoft? First, it was G Suite Legacy against Microsoft Office 365, now Google Docs assistive features, quite similar to the one we have on Word.
